Unique Halloween Costume Ideas

Writen by Arthur Stoller

If you're looking for unique Halloween costume ideas, just take a look around your home. The most unique costumes are always those that are, in a way, the most obvious. For example, if you're like most of us, you've got at least one basket of dirty laundry lying around your house at any given time. Why not dress up as laundry for Halloween? Take a cheap laundry basket, and cut a hole out of the bottom big enough to fit around your waist. Use clothesline to make suspenders that will hold the basket around your body, and then use wooden clothespins to attach pieces of clothing to the basket and clothesline. For an added touch, hang an empty bottle of detergent or fabric softener off of the basket's side. Viola! For only a few dollars and about an hour's worth of time, you've just gotten yourself a unique Halloween costume idea that's sure to blow away all of your party guests.

Most parents will tell you that Legos, those popular building-block toys, clutter nearly every inch of their home. But how many of them would think to make a Lego Halloween costume. Now that's a unique Halloween costume idea! Just spray-paint a large box red, cutting out holes for the arms and head. Hot glue six empty margarine containers, also painted red, to the side of the box in the same pattern as the raised bumps on the side of a Lego. Wear it with red sweatpants and a red sweatshirt, and you're done.

If something a little wilder is your style, you might want to consider dressing up as an attack dog trainer. This is one of the more unique Halloween costume ideas you'll come across, and one that's sure to spark conversation and get a few laughs. Start by sewing the mouth of a toy stuffed dog to the arm of a long-sleeved shirt. Tear a few holes in the shirt and stain it with costume blood. Wear a name tag that says "Bob's Attack Dog School."

Appeal to nostalgia by dressing up as the Operation Man, the famously nervous patient from the board game Operation. Not only is this a truly unique Halloween costume idea, it's one that everyone will recognize immediately. You won't have to explain yourself, but you just may walk away with a prize for most creative costume! Wear a body suit or sweat suit that is flesh-colored (pink, peach, tan, etc.). Cut game pieces out of felt that include a broken heart, a wish bone, and a wrench. Using Velcro, attach the game pieces to your body in the same places they'd appear in the board game.

For even more unique Halloween costume ideas, try searching the web, flipping through magazines, or going through your closet and kitchen cupboards. Ideas abound when you're willing to spend a little time thinking them through.
