Halloween can be a fun time of year for young children, but it can also be scary. Scary sounds, frightening masks and traditional pranks can make it a terrifying holiday. With young children it can be fun to incorporate alternative locations to trick or treat than just visiting nearby neighborhoods. Most shopping malls offer safe trick or treating where children can go from store to store collecting candy and treats. Major grocery chains have also introduced fun activities in their stores with costume contests, give always and traditional trick or treating among the different departments in that location. You won't have to worry about children running in the street or being out in the dark.

Another great way to celebrate is with annual fall festivals provided by your city. They also offer age appropriate costume contests, rides, games, prizes and more. It can be a nice time to socialize with children from your community and get to know other families. Your family may also enjoy a visit to a local pumpkin patch. The pumpkins generally make for a beautiful photo opportunity and it can be fun to take a pumpkin home and carve as a family. Each year you can design a unique face to display for Halloween night.

If you decide to trick or treat door to door, be sure to go to houses that are well lighted. Travel in larger groups to make the experience fun and be sure to carry a light so others can see you when crossing over roads. Stay in your own neighborhood where you know many of the residents and be sure to throw out any opened or unsealed candy. Using your best judgment as a parent will help keep your children safe this Halloween.
